What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.
What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.
What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.
Should I purchase valuation insurance? Check with your homeowner’s insurance policy to see exactly what is covered. Depending on your particular policy, you may want to consider purchasing valuation insurance in case of damage during your move.
What is valuation? This refers to the degree of value of your shipment. A valuation charge compensates movers for assuming a greater degree of liability than the base transportation charges.
Do I have to tip movers? Tips are certainly not mandatory. However, you may want to consider tipping your movers and packers for the service they provide, depending on their quality and professionalism. If employees have gone above and beyond their job, they will certainly appreciate being rewarded for a job well done.
Can I leave my clothing in dresser or chest drawers? You can leave lightweight clothing such as blouses, lingerie, shirts and sweaters in drawers. However, don’t leave heavy items such as sheets, table linens or books in drawers because they damage the furniture. Also remove any valuable or fragile items before the move.
What are “extraordinary value” items? In the moving industry, these items are ones that have a value of more than $100 per pound. You must list all of these items on the inventory form your moving company will provide.
Do I have to hire packers or can I do this myself? You can certainly choose to pack your belongings and hire employees to transport them for you. However, you can also hire professional packers who are very experienced and have access to the proper packing equipment.
Should I disassemble my furniture before the move? You can do this if you have time, but it’s not required. If your movers need to dismantle any furniture, they will reassemble it in your new home.
Will my movers clean my home once my move is complete? Most professional movers will clean up any mess they have made during the actual move. However, they don’t perform general house cleaning so you must hire a professional cleaning service or perform this task yourself.
Can I still move in poor weather? Yes, professional movers are prepared to move in almost any condition including sleet, snow or rain. Just make sure you clear the driveway beforehand if you are moving in snowy conditions.
What should I do to prepare my appliances before my move? Make sure that appliances such as your microwave, dishwasher and washing machine are completely empty before the move. You may also need to hire professionals to disconnect any electric and water connections.
